Some days at work seem particularly long, especially if you start to feel tired and unproductive in the afternoon. Everyone is familiar with the afternoon slump you often get. It happens on days when you are particularly exhausted, have had a big lunch, or are lacking inspiration. It usually occurs in the afternoon, an hour or so after lunch. You stare at your computer screen, trying to focus on what you are doing, only to drift off for a few seconds.
If you start to feel like this here are some helpful afternoon pick-me-ups to boost your productivity and get you out of that frustrating afternoon slump.
Get some oxygen to your brain and refresh yourself with by going outside for a few moments. The fresh air will instantly make you feel more awake. If you don’t have time to go for a stroll outside then at least open your windows and let some fresh air in.
Instead of struggling on your own, schedule some group work for the afternoon. You might be able to beat the afternoon slump by being around other people and working together on exciting projects.
Exercise is an excellent way to improve your mood and give you an energy boost. You will feel refreshed and ready to work hard again after doing some light exercise. Do some exercise or a class on your lunch break such as going for a brisk walk.
Rosemary is meant to be energising. Have a rosemary plant by your desk or buy some rosemary oil or scent. Put it on your wrists and your neck and you will instantly feel revitalised.
Dark chocolate contains antioxidants as well as a small amount of caffeine. Have a square or two of 85% dark chocolate during an afternoon slump and it just might perk you up a bit.
Green tea will give you a caffeine boost and it contains some beneficial properties. It can improve brain function, increases fat burning and can help protect against different types of cancer. Go for green tea instead of a coffee for a boost in the afternoon.
Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and refreshed. You won’t be able to concentrate and your afternoon slump will be even worse if you are dehydrated.
